A Compassionate Heart
The sermon “A Compassionate Heart” teaches that the true heart of God and Jesus is compassion. Using the example of a stethoscope listening to a heartbeat, the message invites people to “listen” to God’s heart in Scripture. Although some think the Old Testament shows a harsh God and the New Testament shows a loving Jesus, the Bible reveals they are the same—both full of compassion, grace, patience, and love.
Examples such as Moses learning God’s character, God showing mercy to Nineveh in the story of Jonah, and Jesus caring for crowds who were “harassed and helpless” all demonstrate that compassion is central to God’s nature. True compassion is a deep inner feeling that moves us to action to help others.
Because God showed compassion to us—ultimately by sending Jesus—believers are called to live with compassion toward others, helping those who are suffering, lonely, sick, or spiritually lost. The sermon ends by challenging listeners to examine their own hearts and respond to Jesus, who is calling them to faith and to a life that reflects His compassion.
