Abimelek

This sermon uses the story of Abimelech (Judges 9) as a warning about the danger of hidden motives and the importance of integrity. Unlike other "dark horses" in Scripture who model faithfulness, Abimelech teaches believers how not to live.

The message centers on three "masks" Abimelech wore:

The Mask of Concern – He pretended to care about the people of Shechem while secretly seeking power and manipulating others for his own benefit.

The Mask of Security – Though he appeared confident and powerful, his insecurity led him to murder his 69 brothers to eliminate any threat to his rule.

The Mask of Ruthlessness – Even at the point of death, Abimelech cared more about his reputation than his relationship with God, revealing a heart driven by pride.

The sermon draws three main lessons:

God remains sovereign and accomplishes His purposes even through sinful people.

We reap what we sow—Abimelech's violent actions ultimately led to his own violent downfall.

Christians should remove their masks and live with integrity, allowing their public lives to match their private character.

The sermon concludes by reminding listeners not to make themselves "king" of their own lives. True humility means submitting to Jesus, the only rightful King, and living authentically before God without hiding behind masks.
