Jephthah

Jephthah's story in Judges 10–11 reminds us that God often uses unlikely people to accomplish His purposes. Rejected by his family and living as an outcast, Jephthah was called to lead Israel against the Ammonites. Although God empowered him for victory, Jephthah made a tragic vow, trying to bargain with God for what God had already chosen to give by grace. His story warns us against making deals with God, thinking we can earn His favor through promises or sacrifices. God's blessing is never based on our performance but on His grace and mercy. The greatest "bargain" we will ever receive is the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, who has already paid the price for us.
